The origins of carnival are very old. The first document we know was written in 1094:”doge vitale falier”. This document is about public entertainment and the word “carnevale” was born!

The venetian carnival is on international event becoming more and more important each year thanks to the streets and squares. The venetian carnival is different from all others, because of the participation of the venetian population and the tourist from all over the world, as well as the city’s interesting past.

The people can’t know their economic situation because they wear masks. The most popular venetian masks are: Moretta (a cat), Bauta (black dress and white mask) and Gnaga (a funny white mask).

A tipical sweet of Venice is “Venetian sweet of San Martino”. San Martino is ceebrated on 11th November and the boys give the sweet to their girlfriends. This sweet represents knight on horse.

The venetian carnival opens with “Gran Brindisi a Venezia” : a great toost; Venetians and tourists will give officially welcome to the carnival. “La festa delle Marie” represents the tribute that the Doge brought annually to twelvebeautiful and humble venetian girls.

In venetian carnival there are also history commemorations and artistic comedies.
