A wick blows the propane and the potato is catapulted very far.
After a good coffee and after playing some board games we left and went home.
In the late Middle Ages, at Sant’ Elpidio a Mare, there was a shortage of water. So people invented a game: they had to participate in four quarter, each composed of six players. The winning quarter could be the first to drink from the pail.

From 1953 each second Sunday of August is celebrated this game: The Contest of Bucket. A procession, consisting of country folk that wear vintage clothes, march along in the village’s roads, as for as the main square. When the contest takes place the quarters must hit the bucket, avoiding the adversaries.

Finally they keep the score of all match. The winner quarter will win a copper bucket.

The day of St John or midsummer is one of the oldest and most joyful festivals, which is celebrated in many European countries, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Scandinavian countries and Finland, Russia and other Slavic countries and many other. The holiday, in fact, is not the Midsummer Day, June 24, but the evening and night from 23rd to 24th of June, which in fact corresponds to summer solstice. From pagan times it is known as the festival of Dew, but Christianity named it the festival of John the Baptist

Athough St. John the Baptist occupies a very important place among the saints, the Church does not attach any great importance to the celebration of his nativity. It is a festival of simple people, who believe, that this shortest night of the year is very special, as the four elements – the water, the fire, the earth and air as well as all the vegetation have magic powers. Young girls make wreaths of wild flowers and put on their heads. A tall pole with a wooden wheel soaked in tar is put up at the top of the highest hill. Men whose names are Jonas (John) set the wheels on fire and make bonfires around it. Young people dance round the fire, sing songs about rye, play games, men try to jump over the fire. The burning wheels on the poles are rolled down the hill into a river or a lake at its foot, men jumping over it all along. On Midsummer Day dew and herbs have special healing powers. Medicinal herbs collected from June 1 to the Midsummer Day can cure 12 (some say 99) diseases. Young girls wash their faces in the dew to make themselves beautiful, and walk barefoot on the grass. Special importance is given to the Midsummer Day's fire. People jump over it or even walk barefoot on the spread ashes.

The peak of the night is the midnight, when according to common belief the fern blossoms and those, who find the blossom will become extremely wise, rich and happy. But it is very difficult to find it as witches protect it and scare everyone away.

Young people don’t go to sleep and sing, dance and play games all through Midsummer Night until sunrise. Girls float wreaths on rivers to find out how soon they will get married.

Special attention is given to people whose names are Jonas, Jonė or Janina; they are given a lot of flowers, special songs are devoted to them.

In Lithuana we have special Days of Memory, when we remember tragic, but very important events in our history – the Day of Mourning and Hope, which we commemorate
on June 14th.

70 years ago, in June 1941 one year after Lithuania and other Baltic states were occupied by the Soviet Union, the the repressive structures, led by Communist party and KGB started massive arrests and deportations of Lithuanian population – the whole families were exiled to Siberia, Altaj region or behind the Polar Circle, by the Laptev Sea. In this way Soviet regime decided to get rid of so called „socally alien elements“. Among them were the most educated part of Lithuanian society - politicians, teachers, officers, journalists, policemen, lawers, bussinessmen and members of their families They had to endure unimaginable hardships, cryelty, injustice and humiliation. The first deportation period lasted only for one week, as on 22 June 1941 Hitler invaded Lituania, but during that week about 13000 people were deported (about 40% of all the exiled were children under the age of 16).

The place were we live, Naujoji Vilnia was the last train station in Lithuania, were men were separated from wives and children, all people put into cattle train vagons and were sent ten thousand kilometres from their motherland into the hell of cold, starvation and physical extermination. (from this deportation suvived only about 5% of Lithuanians.

The daportations continued after the Second World War and during 1945-1952 about 135 500 Lithuanians were deported to Siberia, among them – about 32000 children.
This day is the Day of Mourning ... that thousands of innocent people were killed because of inhumanity, injustice and heartlessness and the Day of Hope ... that it will never happen again.
In the photos you can see the ceremony in Naujoji Vilnia train station by the memorial to the dported Lithuanian people.

The ceremony was opened by Vilnius choir “Laisvė” who sang songs of the exiles. After the moving songs, poets and actors were reading poems, dedicated to the victims of Stalin’s repressions. Among the speakers were Vilnius Mayor A. Zuokas and member of Parliament E. Zingeris, who stated that Lithuania fro Stalinist repressions 1941-1952 lost about 300000 people including the executed, imprisoned in concentration camps and deported citizens.

After the official speeches according to the sounds of music, Lithuanian girls put the garlands of oak-tree leaves on the memorial cross.
One of the most impressive was the speech of Rimantas Kupšys, who was deported the same day as he was born, and after returning to Lithuania became the trainmaster of Naujoji Vilnia train station.
JANUARY 13th THE DAY OF FREEDOM DEFENDERS IN LITHUANIA

On the 13th of January all people of Lithuania are commemorating the Day of Freedom Defenders. 20 years ago the Soviet troops – the Pskov division and the KGB elite Alfa Special Forces attempted to crush the newly reborn Lithuanian state. Some died from the shot wounds; the Soviet tanks crushed some. In total 14 peaceful civilian freedom defenders lost their lives, hundreds more wounded.
The January 13 events are deeply imprinted in the Lithuanians‘ hearts. We can say that this date is one of the most important events in the Lithuanian history. It would be called Lithuania’s ‘Winter War’ which took place in January 1991 and was a crucial for the survival of our nation, because it was our war for Lithuania’s freedom, which was declared in March 1990.
We were not born when tese events happened, but many of those, who were standing in front of tanks and armed soldiers that night by the TV tower were the same age as we are now.

We feel proud of those young people who sacrificed their lives for motherland and freedom.
One of the young men, who was standing in front of the parliament that day wrote: „I had a honour to be amongst thousands in the square in the front of the Parliament, listening to the creaking Soviet tanks coming after they already ‘done their duty for the Soviet motherland’ next to the TV tower. The Parliament was the heart of our statehood, the square around it was a human shield which had nothing just their love of freedom, motherland, believe, hope. Our only weapon was against the Soviet tanks and the Kalashnikovs was our bear arms and our songs, which made a huge crowd as a one body. Then you wait, hoping that by standing on this spot you will be an obstacle on the way of the solders and tanks that will storm the Parliament. You, hope that maybe you will prolong Lithuania’s freedom for a tiny wee second. You and people around you are preparing yourself for a final sacrifice, final duty to your motherland…“

The people, standing there day and night made a miracle – they stopped the soviet tanks, the soldiers retuned to they barracks. A little nation became a big nation – we made the Soviet Empire collapse.
Every year on that day we lit candles at our school, go to the parliament, to the TV tower, where different ceremonies take place. It is interesting to meet the defenders of Lithuanian parliament, listen to their stories about the details of the resistence to Soviet agression, to stant vy the fires and listen to the same songs, which people were singing that tragic night, when bullets broke the song, but did not break the love to motherland and freedom.

The exposition in the Parliament hall shows what primitive guns the defenders had at that time, what letters they wrote to the families and how they were ready to stand against the well armed and trained professional soviet army till their last breath.

We come to see the barricades by the Parliament walls, which were erected during several hours by the defenders and now stand as mute witnesses of those days. We read the inscriptions, made by the people in those days, from the photographs at us look the faces of those who lost their lives for our feedom.
Hi everybody,

I’m
Paolo,

Just
want to tell you how I celebrated 1st May. But before that I’ll tell you what I’ve found
out about this festivity. I won’t bore you , I promise. Just a little
information.

I
searched the net and read an interesting chapter from the book “Calendario “ by
A. Cattabiani (a good book if you want
to know everything about festivals).

May
1st is the International Workers’ Day that commemorates the struggle of working
people in the world. It dates back to
the 1880s in the USA with the fight for an eight-hour work day. The heart of
the movement was in Chicago where during a labour rally organized to protest
against the brutality of the police, a
bomb was thrown to the police and the police responded by firing into the crowd
killing one person and injuring many others.

The
Church has accepted this festivity and consecrated it to the first saint
“worker”, St Joseph. So in 1956 Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of St Joseph
the Worker.

It is
just a coincidence but May Day used to
celebrate the coming of summer, it marked the triumph of light over
darkness. The earliest May Day celebrations
appeared in pre-Christian times, with the festival of Flora, the Roman goddess
of flowers, and the Walpurgis Night celebrations of the Germanic countries. It is also associated with
the festival of Beltaine, of Celtic origin.
Still nowadays in some regions of Italy, like Tuscany, Umbria, Liguria,
there are traditional festivals called “Calendimaggio” . During the festival
the “maggerini” go from door to door to sing songs about nature, spring,
seasons, love. They are joyful songs celebrating rebirth and new life.

The following photos were taken in Macerata and give you an idea about how people
celebrated 1st May : near the public gardens there were stalls and also a band giving a concert. Pity the
weather in the afternoon was not very good and the rain interrupted the concert
a lot of times !
It was a day
when everything went wrong. I went to Mogliano to have a picnic as many people
do on this day. They fill their picnic basket with a lot of good things ,the typical
food is cheese (pecorino) and broad beans and off they go, ready to enjoy
themselves. I too wanted to have fun but:

Hi friends,
this is our last effort on festivals. It is a research on the Jewish festival Passover . It was hard work ! Joking but it took us a lot of time , we have been busy recently. We also added a recipe: go to the section "Festive Food" and try it.
Read on anf find Pesach.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Pesach means “to pass through” or as it is translated
in English “ to pass over”. It is one of the most important festival in the
Jewish year. Jewish people remember how the children of Israel left slavery and were led out of Egypt by
Moses. This is the story and it can be found in the Book of Exodus, Chapter 12
in the Torah:

<span lang="EN-US" style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: IT;">Moses went to see Pharaoh many times. Each time
Pharaoh refused to release the Israelites. Moses warned Pharaoh that God would
send plagues on Egypt if Pharaoh did not
let them go. The ten plagues were: blood, frogs, gnats, flies, blight of the
livestock, boils, hail, locusts, darkness and the death of the first born. <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">God
told the Israelites to slaughter a lamb and brush their doors with the blood so that the angel of death would recognize
and pass over their houses.

<span lang="EN-US" style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: IT;">The final plague was the death of the first born. God
told Moses that the Israelites should mark their doorposts with lamb's blood so
that God could 'pass over' their houses and spare them from this plague. This
is why the festival is called Passover. <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">the
Pharaoh finally let the Israelites go . They left in such a hurry that there
was no time to bake bread for the journey but they took the unleavened dough.
That’s why the feast is also called “the festival of unleavened bread” and
people eat unleavened bread called Matzah

HOW TO GET READY FOR PASSOVER<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Before celebrations begin, the house must be cleaned
and every traces of chamez ( leaven) must be removed. this also symbolizes the
removal of arrogance from their souls. The day before Passover starts all
firstborn males fast to celebrate their escape from the tenth plague. The most
important moment takes place on the
first night of Passover when friends and family gather together for the seder meal.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Seder means order and ceremonies are arranged in a
specific order.

that the prophet will visit every Seder meal and announce the coming of the
Traditional Lithuanian wedding

it is not so easy to describe what traditional Lithuanian wedding is as ic contains different elwements, some of which are the same like all over the world, but there are still some details, which are unique, unfortunately with time old traditions are dying out and only some elements are still present in the wedddings nowadays. To illustrate the text I took some photos from the internet and from my cousin's wedding.
Traditional Lithuanian wedding used to be quite complicated and lasted two days. It consisted of several stages: first the groom had to find a bride, then he had to propose officially and only then, if the girl agreed to marry, the wedding was arranged. Today these two important stages are left out as usually young people decide to get married themselves. And the next stage is – ENGANGEMENT
During this ceremony in the past both parents took part. The Best Man declared about the engagement and the groom put the ring on the bride’s finger. Then everybody exchanged the presents, usually handmade things, like woven or knitted sashes, towels, ornamented socks or glows, wooden utensils etc. and the wedding was planned. Now usually young man asks the girl to be his wife and then they both inform the parents.

The wedding itself in Lithuania starts a week before the official ceremony – the bride has a Hens’ Party (Mergvakaris) and the groom – the Stags’ Party (Bernvakaris), when they meet their friends and say good-bye to their unmarried life. Mergvakaris is a special girls-only party, organized by the best friend of the bride. There is a lot of singing on that day – girs sing traditional songs about happy young days, whicg are followed by special ceremonies. One of them is twinning a wreath of ruta ( (Lithuanian national flower and symbol of purity). During the party different spells are made, games are played.
And then comes the day of the wedding. White dress is still traditional in Lithuania and like everywhere else it symbolizes purity. But in Lithuania on the wail brides also wear a small wreath of ruta (bot. rue ), which symbolize the life before marriage.

The ceremony is traditionally held in the church and in the town hall, where relatives and friends come to congratulate the couple.
Later the newly weds go to different beautiful places to take photos and there they also follow certain traditions. One of them is to carry a bride over a bridge or several bridges, which symbolize the connection of two parts together.

In the past the groom had to carry the bride over the threshold of the house, nut now there are no thresholds, so instead the brides are carried over bridges. Usually they also leave a lock with their name on the bridge and throw the key into the water.
The parents and the guests wait for them at the reception place. The parents meet the young couple with bread, salt and two little glasses of water, which is supposed to ensure prosperity in their new life. The bride and the groom are given to do some works to show how they are ready for the future life. The Best Man or the Matchmaker plays the most important role as the teacher and the advisor. He not only explains, but also shows how to do different things; to chop wood, to feed the baby (a doll), how to avoid scandals and so on.
As soon as the wedding party arrived at their table another surprise awaited them – a fake wedding party (a man dressed as a bride and a woman dressed as a groom) has occupied their seats. Now the table has to be ransomed. The matchmaker is usually wearing a special sash over his shoulder with the inscription “the Best Man – the Best Liar” as he must tell a lot of lies to make the bride marry the groom. He has to start the negotiations with the guests, sitting round the table to explain that this is their table, while the pretenders argue that they were here first, were comfortably seated and would stay throughout the reception. They want some treat and good jokes and the documents of the groom and the bride. This is not an easy task and also costs some money to satisfy the guests need for candies, cakes and traditional drinks. The Matchmaker must be extremely witty to answer all the “uncomfortable” questions and win the wedding table. After a while of innovative haggling, the fake wedding party gives way to the real bride and groom and after the wedding party takes their places, the reception starts.

div>

The Matchmaker is also the person who leads all the wedding, tells the jokes, the toasts, organizes all the activities and in general regulates the whole reception party. He also has to teach the groom how to kiss, when the guests start singing the song, meaning that everything on the table tastes bitter and the groom must kiss the bride to sweeten the food and drinks.

After midnight, when all the guests sing a song “We wish you happy long years”, the most moving part of the ceremony starts: the Parents pass the Family Hearth to their children. It is a specially arranged decorative candle, which is put on the table in front of the married couple and parents with them luck and happiness. Then the wreath of ruta is taken off the bride’s veil and is set on fire. The veil is given to the first bridesmaid and the bride’s head is covered with white headscarf. From the lapel of the groom’s jacket the flower is given to the first groomsmate, and the groom is given a cap. Then the bride and the groom start cutting the wedding cake.

In the older times, when my parents were young, the wedding continued on the next day. Next morning, the bride and groom along with the wedding party were woken up by matchmaker and musicians. Matchmakers gave guests to try the cheese that we supposedly "pressed" throughout the night (since cheese is pressed from curd it had to be a proof that newlyweds had an good night together). In the morning the musicians usually were kidnapping the bride and the groom had to pay a “huge ransom” to get her back. But the most important events were happening at about noon.

The musicians usually dressed like executioners came to arrest the Matchmaker, who was accused of lying to the bride about the groom and had to be punished for his lies. This was kind of a performance, consisting of several parts: firstly, the “prosecutor” had to “press charges” against the “accused” – the Matchmaker. A really impressive life-story was invented and the Matchmaker was accused of all the possible and impossible crimes, but the most serious was choosing the wrong husband for the bride. The whole trial was entertaining and included declaring funny accusations and reading the absurd will of the matchmaker. Then the “judge” announced the “death sentence” through: either shooting with champagne corks, or drowning in the bottle of vodka, or freezing him in the oven, but as these things were impossible, the decision was made to hang him. Then the Matchmaker was given the word to say that he is very sorry, that he would not be able to marry the rest of unmarried young people and he left all his property with the instructions what to do with it to the young couple. The bridesmaids were supposed to cry and plead since they would never get married. The culmination of the whole show was that the bride saved the matchmaker since she loved the groom and did not care that he did not own any riches the matchmaker had lied about. A rag dummy was hanged instead. After that the Matchmaker treated everybody with special drink, called “ the Matchmaker’s blood”.
This was an entertaining ceremony, but now people lose interest in old traditions, they do not know the real meaning of all those activities ant more. I heard it from my parents.
I’ll mention just a few: frontier-free travel and trade; I understand that you

countries, cheaper phone calls, protection of animals on land and oceans, help
for the reconstruction of areas hit by natural disasters. Besides I support a
lot of activities in education, training, culture. You already know Comenius

Dear our friends,
As we are already the third-formers, our duty was to organise a traditiona festival for our school-leavers, called „A Hundred Days“, which means, that only one hundred days remain till the first final examination. Our senior students feel it and for some of them it is a joyful, for others, maybe sad event. They feel sad as they know thay thay will have to leave school, part with their class-mates, leave their beloved class-teacher and enter the world of adults, in which they minght face different problems.
But on this, particular day they do not want to think about problems; they come to school to celebrate. All the shool- leavers were gathered in their clssrooms from where they were taken to the first, second, then third floors in order to fulfil different tasks, which had been set for them. For example, on the first floor they could find thenselves in a Stone Age and leave their hand prints and initials in clay.

On the second floor they appeared in the Middle Ages and could take photos of themselves in medieval costumes. And on the third floor everybody was given a candle to be taken into the Assembly hall and put there.
After all the students and teachers gathered in the Essembly hall, the performance started. In the beginning we showed the process of the creation of the Earth on which we all live. Then audience was taken to the Stone Age and saw wild dancing of the prehistorian people. With the song about time they were taken to the Middle Ages, also presented through songs and dances, adn finally appeard in modern times.

The school leavers were also given to show their program and, the most importįant, to say their big thank you to the teachers, class-teachers, school administracy and parents.
Among the speakers were the Principal, class-teachers, parents and other guests of honour.
At the end of the ceremony traditional nominations were given to some of the school-leavers: among them were „Lady of the year“, „Gentelman of the year“, „Worker of the year“, „Fanthom of the year“ and others.
KARAIMS IN lITHUANIA
Most people in the world might not have heard about a small nation, called Karaims, unless they visit Crimean peninsula or a small Lithuanian town Trakai, which is known not only as the former capital of Lithuania, but also as the capital of Lithuanian Karaims. This is one of the reasons that we always take our foreign guests to Trakai, let them get acquainted with this exotic people and treat them with extremely delicious traditional Karaim food.
Who are the Karaims, how they came to Lithuania and how they manage to survive, being such a small community (fewer than 300 people in Lithuania), preserving their culture, traditions and language?
Six hundred years two Turkish nations - Tatars and Karaims have been living in Lithuania. From linguistic and ethnogenetic point of view they belong to the oldest Turkish tribes - Kipchaks. In the 5th c. BC they lived in the West of Mongolia, later they were conquered by Huns and after first nomadic Turkish empires were founded, their history is closely connected with the migration of the Middle Asian tribes.
Following Turkish oguzes, the biggest Turkish tribe, in the 10th c. Kipchaks crossed the Volga and settled near the Black Sea and Northern Caucasus, occupying huge territories, called Khasar Kaganate. They did not have an integral state; khans guided the union of different tribes. It was famous for its religious tolerance. Karaim missionaries reached the kaganate in the 8-10th c. passing their faith to some Turkish tribes, living in the southern steppes of Russia and Crimea. Common language and religion united these tribes as a nation for a long time; the name of religion became ethnonym. Contemporary Lithuanian Karaims are their descendants.

According to the tradition, The Great Duke of Lithuania Vytautas, after one of the marches to the Golden Horde in 1397-1398 brought from Crimea several hundreds of Karaims (about 380 families) and settled them in the Great Duchy of Lithuania. It was connected with the state policy of The Great Duchy - to inhabit the empty areas, to build towns and castles, to develop trade and economic life. Karaims were settled in Trakai between the two castles in present Karaim Street. Later they also setteled in Biržai, Naujamiestis, Pasvalys, Panevėžys, however, Trakai has always been the community's administrative and spiritual centre in Lithuania and they hold it not only a homeland, but as fatherland, too. Throughout the centuries their ethnic and cultural relations with the Karaims from Crimea were not interrupted either.

Vytautas and other rulers of Lithuania expressed their confidence to the Karaims by affording the privileges to the Karaim communities, who were always loyal to Lihuanian rulers. In most of Karaim poems and songs about Vytautas he is named Vatat Bij (“the King crushing his enemies”) and many of the Karaims even now have a picture of Vytautas at home.

The functions of Karaim men included guarding the castles and in Lithuanian army existed a separate Karaim unit. Karaim civil people mainly worked on land. They were famous for gardening, cattle-breeding, especially horse-breeding. Like other inhabitants of towns, Karaims dealt with handicraft, trade, owned inns, etc.
The Karaim religion is called Karaism is based on the Old Testament or Bible and does not accept any of other Scriptures – the New Testament, the Talmud or the Koran. They believe all authentic truth is hidden only in the Old Testament and every Karaim has a right to look for it in the text himself. The name of the religion itself (Karaism) comes from the word 'kara' which in Arabic and Hebrew languages means 'to read', ' to recite the Holy Writ'.
Their church is called Kenesa.

KARAIM FESTIVALS
Karaim annual festivals are based on a lunar calendar, which consists of 354 days, 8 hours, 48 minutes. It is divided into 19-year cycle, among which 12 are ordinary and 7 are leap years with a thirteenth additional month. The month has 29 or 30 days.
The first traditional festival, JYL BAŠY (the beginning of the year) is celebrated on the first day of spring Artarych-aj (March-April). This day is commemorated by a prayer in kenesa and then the family gathers at home for a special dinner.
TYMBYL CHYDŽY (The Feast of Unleavened Bread) – one of the biggest holiday, celebrated on the 15th after JYL BAŠY and lasts for a week. Especially important are the first and the last days of the week, and Saturday and Sunday of that week. After the prayer, on Eve the whole family sits at the table and listens to the extracts from the Bible, which lasts for about 15-20 minutes. Later the God's gifts: wine and round flat cakes (tymbyl) made for this occasion are consecrated. Tymbyls are cakes, 5-7cm in diameter, made of flour with cream and butter or butter and eggs. They are made using special equipment and baking tymbyls is regarded as a ritual, in which the whole family takes part. Apart from eggs, the main dish of the dinner is šišlik (lamb or veal steak). Also such dishes are served as pudding and cake, walnuts with honey, dried fruit soft drink. There is a tradition to visit friends the whole week and try tymbyl at every place, because the cake has different taste at every house. In the past children had a traditional game with nuts: they had to strike the rows (lines) of nuts with a special ball, made of metal or ivory. The Ester Sunday is named SAN BAŠY (beginning of count) and from it from it Karaims count 7 weeks till next important festival - AFTALAR CHYDŽY
AFTALAR CHYDŽY (Pentecost) is celebrated 7 weeks from the Easter Sunday – this holiday is always on Sunday – 50th day after Tymbyl chydžy' Sunday. Originally it was a festival for expressing thankfulness to God for the new fruit harvest. Historically it is also related to the giving of the Ten Commandments and has the name Matin Torah or "giving of the Law." According to the Old Testament, at this time God gave the Torah to the people through Moses on Mount Sinai. During this festival in Kenesa Ten Commandments of God are recited, after the ceremony, at home a special dish is eaten - katlama - it is a curds cake which consists of seven layers (four layers of cake, three of curds) to symbolise seven weeks after Tymbyl chydžy. According to an old tradition it was allowed to swim after Pentecost.
On the first day of the seventh month Ajrychsy–aj (September-October) BYRHY KIUNIU (The Day of Trumpets) is celebrated. On the tenth day of the same month - BOŠATLYCH KIUNIU (The Day of Atonement) - on this day people should keep the fast and pray in kenesa for God to absolve sins from morning to twilight. Confession is the main feature of the holiday. Nobody speaks loudly about the sins, as the confession is general. Because only God, not even the highest priest can forgive. Before the mass people apologise everybody they know; parents should be apologised separately; the priest apologises the whole community.
The last holiday of the year is ALAČYCH KIUNIU (The Tabernacles) – is celebrated on the 15 th of Ajrychsy–aj and lasts for 8 days.
Karaims preserved their traditions and folklore. They are very proud of their traditional cuisine and are ready not only treat their guests with the most popular dish – kybyn, but also teach how to make it. During their visit to Lithuania Italian students were able to try out how to make traditional Karaim kybyn, which is crescent-shaped leavened paste pie, filled with chopped lamb or beef meat filling. It is baked in an oven and served hot. Everybody recognised that they were really delicious.
Karaims are always happy to tell every visitor about their history, traditions, sing and dance traditional dances.Karaim melodies were passed from generation to generation, they weren't recorded until the 20th century, so many of them were forgotten or lost. Karaims took many melodies from other nations and adapted to their texts. As a result many traditional Karaim dances remind of Polish, Ukrainian or even Lithuanian dance melodies.Orininal melodie survived in old rituals, for example - weddings. the melodie are simmple, with monotonic repetition of the same motifs. they reflect the traditional composition of poetic texts.
Many countries around the world celebrate day of liberation, and as the name suggests it marks the day when a place is liberated by an occupying army of some kind. In Italy, April 25, 1945 was the day when the Allied troops and partigian force finally were able to liberate Italy – and today, it commemorates not just that liberation but also is a date when Italians honor their fallen soldiers. In particular, Liberation Day is a day on which to honor the fallen partisans of the Italian Resistance who fought the Nazis as well as Mussolini’s troops throughout World War II.April 25th in Italy public holiday is a day when you’ll see gatherings in towns with marching bands and big flags, political rallies and music concerts.
Origins of italian partisan movement
The resistance movement was initially composed of independent troops often supported by the local population, spontaneously formed by members of political parties previously outlawed by the Fascist regime. Later, the Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale created by the Italian Socialist Party, the Partito d'Azione, Democrazia Cristiana and other minor parties took control of the movement, in accordance with King Victor Emmanuel III 's ministers and the Allies.
Some of the most famous partisan Brigates were:
The Garibaldi brigades
The first Garibaldi Brigades appeared in November 1943; in April 1945 there were 575. Each brigade consisted of 40 to 50 members, divided into four or five groups which in turn were divided into two units of five or six combatants in each.
The Garibaldi brigades made up about half of the armed forces of the partisan army; they were the best organized part and the fittest for battle. In the summer and fall of 1944 the Garibaldi Brigades led the sweeping offensive of the partisan army in central and northern Italy. They were the shock force of the liberating April Uprising of 1945.
The Matteotti Brigades
The brigades Matteotti, during the Resistance, were the Partisans related to the Italian Socialist Party of Proletarian Unity (PSIUP). They were one of the five main political groups that participated in the partisan struggle for national liberation. Giacomo Matteotti Brigades distinguished themselves during the partisan struggle, for its effectiveness, internal discipline and fighting spirit. the place of actions the Matteotti brigade were:Lombardia,Toscana,Piemonte and Veneto.
The Maiella Brigades
In December, 1943, the partisan brigades of Abruzzo, “Maiella Patriotic Groups”, were formed on the banks of the Sangro river, led by capitan Troilo.
The English army made use of this group again in the Germans in January 1944.
After having set Abruzzo free, the group became “Maiella Brigades” and continued the liberation war as far as Bologna and Veneto.
Maiella Brigades, mentioned many times in the allied war bulletins, were the only partisan formation awarded with a gold medal for military valour. It’s battle flag is Kept In the Vittoriano.Francescohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17613984458113199628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-201096231581084331.post-69911937195337494552012-04-19T20:51:00.002+02:002012-05-01T11:57:28.446+02:00SAN SEVERINO FESTIVAL
